Ceramics show gives area's aging artists a chance to show off

For the past nine years, members of the Madison Senior Center have held a ceramics contest and show. The steps in producing their designs take time and attention to detail.

Sherrie Cahill instructs the class of avid crafters. One room at the center is devoted to ceramics with a firing kiln, paint-spotted work tables and shelves to hold figurines and vases, to name a few, in various stages of production.

Jerry Whitworth loans city gallery pieces, his own work

Danish, British and American artwork now hangs in the mayor's conference room at City Hall. The pieces are on loan from Jerry Whitworth, a Madison native, accomplished visual artist and global merchandiser of fine art pieces.

Soon after last year's election, Mayor Paul Finley approached the Madison Arts Council about placing artwork in the hallway leading to his office. Recently, Finley decided his conference room needed a livelier appeal.

Calling All Landscape Artists of the Southeast

The Plein Air Painters of the Southeast (PAP-SE) invites you to their annual three-day workshop, August 27 – 30, 2009, in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Six expert PAP-SE instructors will offer their insights and know-how to help art students strengthen their painting skills and enliven their compositions. The instructors for this workshop include: Perry Austin, Loryn Brazier, Dee Beard Dean, Paula Frizbe, L. Diane Johnson and Richard Oversmith. An itinerary of the instructor times and topics will be forthcoming in next week's update flyer.

Plus… in an effort to promote camaraderie among fellow plein air painters throughout this region of the United States, PAP-SE is extending an invitation to all outdoor painting groups from Florida to Maryland to paint with us from August 25–30, 2009.

This is a call for plein-air painters to join PAP-SE at Leatherwood Mountains vacation resort for unprecedented painting and artist networking opportunities. If your goal is to learn, register early for our workshop and save $50.00 on the fee. Or, if you'd simply like to get away to a place where the scenery begs to be painted and other outdoor artists abound, visit leatherwoodmountains.com to view the location and inquire about cabin rentals.

PAP-SE has selected this glorious spot for their workshop and to host the first Annual Outdoor Painter's Forum. The landscape here is picturesque — the amenities for socializing and relaxation are second to none. The attached flyer details contact information for registering for the PAP-SE workshop and cabin reservations.

This promises to be a weekend in paradise for landscape painters who crave the beauty of nature and seek the company of like-minded artists. We hope to make this an annual tradition, via both the workshop and outdoor painter's forum. With a full house of participants, this annual event could become a popular art exhibition and summer destination for art collectors, media folks and landscape art enthusiasts from around the country.

Mark your calendar now—and reserve your spot for the workshop and/or on-site cabins—for the weekend or a full week in late August that promises to be educational, fun loving filled with painterly fellowship to last a lifetime.

Visit our newly designed website, PAP-SE.com for more info.

Hope to see you in August!

Madison Station Quilters

Women use common thread to create popular guild

Wednesday, June 24, 2009
By Gregg L. Parker
For the Madison Spirit writeone35758@yahoo.com

Diane Hunter and Susan Nolen expected maybe 40 people at the first meeting of Madison Station Quilters. More than 120 joined.

"Three meetings later, our group now numbers more than 180. We suspect it's not done growing," Nolen said.

While organizing the guild, Hunter and Nolen felt fortunate to find numerous quilting friends who agreed with their idea for a guild serving Madison, Monrovia and Harvest. "They helped pull it all together," Nolen said.

The group's name pays homage to the community's original name.

"We founded the guild based on a hunch that a number of people in the Madison, Harvest, Monrovia and Toney communities were quilters" but not affiliated with a guild, Nolen said.

Textile artist, Gail Bryant, worships through her work

Textile artist worships through her work

Wednesday, June 24, 2009
By Gregg L. Parker
For the Madison Spirit writeone35758@yahoo.com

Gail Bryant creates art with cloth, dye, stitches, paint

Gail Bryant has appreciated cloth and textiles since admiring a piece of hand-woven Irish linen that belonged to her grandmother who immigrated to the United States in 1923. Her textile business is simply called Gail Bryant.

As an artist, Bryant works with textile as a medium. "Work begins with blank white or black cloth," which she alters with dye, discharge, stitch and paint to create two- and three-dimensional pieces.

Her designs work well as home artwork, a hanging for an office or as a unique scarf or wrap. "I also create short runs of exclusive yardage for interior and clothing designers."

Her business started in 2008 at an art show in Hoover. Her marbled, silk scarves were quite popular, nearly a sell-out. "The most amazing God-gift was my entry for competition, 'Garment of Praise - Isaiah 61' that won the cash award for 'Honor of the Show Judge.' " Hesitant to enter, she designed with white organza as "a visual expression of my journey to a love-relationship with God."

Bryant is scouting upcoming shows and sites to place her work. She welcomes commissions, collaborates with fellow artists and enjoys working with clients on personal, one-of-a-kind gifts.

Studio hours are by appointment. Call 479-3086. For samples of Bryant's work, visit www.gailbryant.net.
