Danish Woven Hearts Christmas Ornament Class Nov. 21
Instructor, Kathi Bertsch will show you how to create two heart ornaments in the Danish tradition. The first one is stuffed and the second is lined, stitched and left open as a basket. Each participant will make one of each. All supplies are provided. There will be a variety of fabrics to choose from. Class size 6-12. Cost $15. Register today at 539-1665 or reflectives@comcast.net. A little history about the Danish Woven Heart Ornamental Baskets: Affectionately known in Scandinavia as "julehjerter", the traditional whimsical hearts were woven out of paper. The Danish fairytale writer – Hans Christian Andersen - created the very first woven heart in the mid 1800s. This original woven heart still exists today, exhibited in its home country for all to see; reminding us of the power of love. The tradition of making woven hearts was very much a Scandinavian secret. Families in Scandinavia would sit down and weave these lovely paper hearts in the days leading up to Christmas. The woven hearts would then be hung up on their Christmas trees, with some bearing gifts of candies or cookies to surprise their children.
